Review: Sarah McLachlan outshines most people who find themselves in her shoes

I appreciate Sarah McLachlan but she’s not usually my kind of music, and red flags wave over any album written while grieving a loved one (her father), ending a marriage and changing management and label.

But knock me over with a feather, her new album Shine On is a keeper…mature, thoughtful, and a welcome companion for anyone emerging from a period of loss. There’s still some pain, naturally, but also recognition that it’s ok to move on and even be happy at times.

Kudos to McLachlan for avoiding cliche and homily, and to long-time music partner and producer Pierre Marchand for his variety and flawless execution.

BELOW: Broken Heart (which, tsk tsk, they chickened out making a proper country ballad, which would be massive!), In Your Shoes, and Turn The Lights Down Low.
