Answer

Lyrics

I will be the answer at the end of the line
I will be there for you while you take the time
In the burning of uncertainty
I will be your solid ground
I will hold the balance
If you can’t look down

If it takes my whole life
I won’t break, I won’t bend
It’ll all be worth it, worth it in the end
‘Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
When the stars have all gone out
You’ll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently into morning
For the night has been unkind
Take me to a place so holy
That I can wash this from my mind
The memory of choosing not to fight

If it takes my whole life
I won’t break, I won’t bend
It’ll all be worth, it worth it in the end
‘Cause I can only tell you what I know
That I need you in my life
And when the stars have all burned out
You’ll still be burning so bright

Cast me gently into morning
For the night has been unkind

Trivia/Notes

Sarah says

Sarah: “[…]Quite often though, a verse of a chorus will come out almost in its entirety. These little nuggets of ideas then have be sort of worked on and fine tuned and they’re like pieces of a puzzle. Like, Answer is another great example…I had the verse [sings first verse]…You know and that part. And then, I was playing that for my producer one day and for whatever reason I tagged on this song, this verse from another song that was 12 years old…which was this part [sings the ‘cast me gently into morning’ part]…And that whole part. And the sentiment is completely the opposite of everything that the verse was all about. And my producer said: ‘That sounds brilliant together!’
Steve Inskeep: “Explain what you mean when you say ‘the sentiment was completely different”
Sarah: “Well the verse…The whole idea behin the verse is all about ‘I will be here for you, I will do whatever it takes, I’ll wait for you as long as it takes for you to decide, to make a decision to be with me. I’ll be patient ’til the end of time.’”
Steve Inskeep: “It’s a love song.”
Sarah: “It’s a love song. It’s this beautiful sentiment of hope and of patience and then you get to the chorus and reality kicks in and, ‘well I guess I didn’t quite live up to my expectations’.”
