Closer: The Best Of Sarah McLachlan

IN some ways, Sarah McLachlan has it all. Not drop-dead gorgeous, but undeniably, intangibly beautiful.
And I’m talking about her face, her voice and her songs. Even though her mainstream breakthrough did result in a period of over-saturation, McLachlan was responsible for some of the best “relationship” songs of the 1990s.
This collection does contain many of her moments of magic but like any compilation, can provoke
debate as to unwarranted inclusions and unforgivable omissions. I’m pretty satisfied with the latent
power of The Path of Thorns and Possession as well as two of her most moving songs, Building a Mystery and World on Fire (I wept when I first saw the video to that).

The running order can get you down a bit … I do think that taking Adia, Angel and I Will Remember You
at a stretch can be a bit much and I do have to gripe a little about the absence of the touching
When She Loved Me (remember how it was used in Toy Story 2?) and the totally joyous Ice Cream,
which has all sorts of personal memories for this old man.
But still, the album has lots of great music and two new songs to boot. What’s not to like, really?
