Alberta Ballet unveils lineup for 2014-15

Alberta Ballet announced a 2014-15 season Monday that features the return of a few old favourites, touring shows from Monaco and Houston, and a new take on an old classic.

For Edmonton, that would be Carmen (March 20-21), which will be choreographed by Alberta Ballet’s own Yukichi Hattori, on a bill that also features Forgotten Land, with choreography by Jiri Kylian. The company performs Don Quixote (Oct. 3-4), The Three Musketeers (Nov. 7-8) and The Nutcracker (Dec. 12-14). In February, they’ll remount Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Feb. 20-21), with new songs from Sarah McLachlan and choreography from Jean Grand-Maitre. The all-male parody ensemble Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will be presented Jan. 20-21, while Stanton Welch and the Houston Ballet present Les Bayadere May 8-9.

“Those who love classical ballet will be enthralled,” says Alberta Ballet artistic director Grand-Maitre, “and those who revel in more contemporary fare will rejoice, for there is something for everyone in this dazzling season, featuring 33 distinguished dancers handpicked from around the world, and a repertoire highlighted by five Alberta premieres inspired by history’s greatest heroes and legends.”
