International Lilith Fair?

Post by Miguel » Mon May 10, 2010 1:25 am

Here's an article from the Defamer where Terry McBride spilled some info about expanding Lilith outside of North America. It's always Western Europe and East Asia, I wonder if they will ever make it to South America :?:

Lilith Fair Might Be Heading Down Under!
By Jess McGuire on May 10, 2010 at 9:07 AM

In a recent interview with the Advocate, singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan talked about Lilith Fair’s return to the US festival circuit – and then mentioned that the tour might be heading to Australia in September. What?! If you like your music served up by people who bleed on a monthly basis, it’s time to get very excited…

It’s actually McLachlan’s manager (and co-founder of Lilith Fair) Terry McBride who spills the Antipodean tour details in the interview.

“We’re definitely thinking 2010-2011,” he says. “And then we’re expanding it outside of North America. We’re going to Australia in September and the first week of October. We’re going to the U.K. marketplace indoors in late October. Then over to Japan and Asia in March. Back into North America for the summer of 2011. And what we’re trying to do is expand the Lilith brand and concept because this concept can work anywhere. It just has to be the people with the will and the desire and the passion to make it happen.”

But international expansion isn’t the only big change in store for Lilith Fair.

“In 2012, Lilith will switch from being a traveling show to being a destination,” McBride says. “So maybe three North American shows — so maybe one on the West Coast, one on the East Coast, and one in Canada. By that time, maybe we’ll have developed about 20 international marketplaces. And what I love about that is that, you know, a show that you do in England, a show that you do in Finland, would be very culture-coded by the artists of that area, with a few international artists coming in. And what I love about that is that, over time, those international artists get a footprint and can come to North America. For a lot of people, this will probably the first time that they’ll see a Gossip or a La Roux or a Grace Potter or any of these artists. And that’s really, really cool. We can put on Kate Miller along with Missy Higgins knowing that they’re going to be key to a Lilith Fair in Australia.”

Good news on Lilith coming over here to the Uk even if it will be indoor shows. I would guess they will be able to do all the major cities with arenas this way so; London, Brimingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Edingbough, Cardiff and Belfast for sure and then possibly Newcastle and (hopefully) Sheffield too.

The use of the words "brand" and "concept" worry me as it makes the whole thing sound like a hollow corperate enity and not a music festival.

EAST ASIA?!!! I mean, seriously????!!!!

Though I doubt Sarah would go farther than Japan...
I became so excited for a moment! But time for reality checks now hehe... Only the one-hit-wonders from the Lilith line-up would probably visit here (read: Selena Gomez, Ke$ha, Rihanna) and sadly, Southeast Asia is a big market for this type of performers. No wonder they LOVE having concerts here...

I have my doubts about East Asia also. There is alot of time that will pass before we get to that point. Changes certainly will be made so let us watch and listen and see what happens. My opinion is, Sarah does not have to go all the way there. She has a tremendous following here and the US and UK and South America. I mean, come on people, it is a marketing venture and big bucks and that is all it is. I can understand how the companies want to make the most cash with the people that they have for the moment. We all love Sarah, but the fact of the matter is, she will not be singing when she is 60. Somewhere along the line, we have to let it go. And I tell you one thing more, when that time comes, it's going to hurt. However, as we ride the moment, it's all good and that my friends, is the best part. :)

Honestly I agree with you 100%, though of course I'd kill for a chance to see Sarah live so a part of me is still hopeful that she'll visit here someday. Hate to say this but East Asia especially the Southeast (well, most of it anyway) has the unfortunate reputation for decades of being the cash cow of recording companies for the latest "flavor of the month". Of course, Sarah have some fans here but imho, it's not worth the effort of travelling all the way here (though her record company might disagree with that). It's plain obvious they want to promote her new album in Asia (which isn't a bad thing btw) and this would mean great opportunity for Sarah to finally make the most out of the immensely huge East/SE Asian market but... right now I'm having mixed feelings about this...

I can sense Sarah falling into the trap of commercialism but I want to be proven wrong...

This is for you Jessel ;)
Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan, who is coming out with a new album called “Laws of Illusion,” spent an afternoon with us chatting about music, her kids and her wish to perform in the Philippines.

When we asked Sarah why she named her new album “Laws of Illusion,” Sarah explained that it was an offshoot of the “emotional rollercoaster I experienced when I separated from my husband.”

Sarah, who has two small kids, said she brings them to her tours. “So it is a big adventure for them when they come to work with mommy,” she disclosed with a smile.

The multi-platinum and Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter is also looking forward to performing in the Philippines. “I have been to Japan, Hong Kong and India but I have not been to the Philippines yet,” she said. “I would love to go there one of these days. I know I have a lot of fans there.”

It is my opinion that, in recent events that led to the not so well received Lilith Fair scandals, for the future, let us just have Sarah and Friends Tour. It sounds better, and the fact is, we want sarah mostly with her band. ;)
